Dates / Khajoor  and Nuts Modak is an integral sweet offered as 'Prasad' or Naivedyam to Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Chahurthi. These modaks are easy to make and do not contain any sugar except the natural sweetness from dates.  You can be flexible with the quantity of nuts and sesame seeds used. Dates contain fibre and antioxidants in addition to  several vitamins and minerals

Ingredients:

  • 150 grams dates deseeded and chopped
  • 1 to 2 tbsp of evaporated milk (optional )
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • 1/2 to 1 tsp rose essence  (optional)
  • 2 tbsp of coarsely ground almonds
  • 2 tbsp of coarsely ground pistachios
  • 1 tsp of roasted sesame seeds

    Method:

    1. Organize and arrange the ingredients.
    2. In a pan, dry roast the chopped nuts on low heat for a minute taking care not to burn the nuts. Keep them aside.
    3. Take dates in  another heavy bottom skillet and saute the dates on low flame. Add ghee and stir at regular intervals.

    4. In between add the evaporated milk to the dates. Within 3 to 4 minutes the dates become soft mushy mass.

    5. Add the nuts and toasted sesame seeds to the dates and saute for a minute. Now put off the flame.

    6. Add the rose essence at this stage.
    7. Mix nicely and let the dates mixture cool slightly.
    8. Once the dates mixture is cool enough to handle, grease your palms and make modaks with modak mould from  this mixture. This misture yields around 10 modaks.

    9. Refrigerate for an hour.
    10. After an hour take out the modaks
    11. Offer as prasad or naivedyam .
    12. Distribute to family and friends.
    13. You can store the remaining modaks in a refrigerator.

    Tips:

    1. Omit the milk if the dates are soft.
